Just got off a meeting with other mods. We (really those who have the skillz ie not I ) are working on possible solutions for what’s next. Jalopnik isn’t abandoning us, so please do not take it out on the authors there. This is 100% not their call. Your conti nu ing patience is greatly appreciated , we will get through this.

Thanks for all you are doing! Can you make some post(s) or let us know in the Discord maybe some specifics of what you’d discussed or what yo ur potential contingency plans are?

OK, we have a channel specifically for Oppo v.2 website replacement ideas on the Discord (on the left, titled ‘oppo-2- website-chat’), so if you/they wanted to come on the Discord to talk about it there with Oppo IT peeps like Jminer and Nick, that’d probably help things along as they want to help out!

I’m sad this era is over. BUT I am very happy that Jalop staff went to bat to keep it open long enough for us to scramble something else into being. We could’ve all just woken up to a HTTP 404 scenario... THAT would’ve been MUCH worse. So if anything I am super glad they’ve stuck their necks out for us in that way. I am happy for writers that’ve come from here and made it to the fp or elsewhere. Writers change publications and locations and subject matter. I have no malice for the authors at all, if anything, I’m super proud they worked hard and made the leap. That’s awesome. I’m not totally happy with DriveTribe, but it’s not the worst. Interested in seeing where we “end up”.

AND a HUGE thanks to all the mods who’re slamming keyboards and picking up phones to make this happen. If I had gold to give, I’d pass some out to fuel your efforts. Gonna hit the Discord and see what’s current!

As a user, It really isn’t your fault . It was a business decision and probably a sound one at that. This unvetted exercise sooner or later would have gotten Kinja in trouble. Hopefully the Drive Tribe folks will welcome us visitors and stay risk tolerant .

I will continue to use Jalopnik , but without posting rights, it just isn’t as compelling. To be honest, there is more compelling content in an hour of Oppo than in two days of Jalopnik .

This isn’t a hit on Jalopnik, its just the difference of 4 to 6 professional writers making three pages of content several times a week compared to 400 amateurs posting 1/4 pages of content 6 times an hour.

I know we’re only just learning, but are all the posts going to be completely scrapped, comments and all, or are they trying to figure out some sort of transition so that we don’t lose it all. I’m probably going to end up copy/pasting the longer, more memorable articles I wrote up here to DT, but I can’t take the comments with me, and that discussion is kind of the best part.

I really hope you guys are able to work something out and I hope there are greater powers that can step in too.  One of the biggest things I’m bummed about is the loss of some great articles that have been written here through the years. Personally, my RX-8 article has over 200k views and my Quickjack one has 55k views and are on the first page of google search results. I still get e-mails from people fairly regularly asking for advice after reading them. It would at least be nice if our works could at least be kept up even if we couldn’t post anymore and I’m sure others feel that way too. I’ve been researching some options to get my more useful and better written posts up somewhere.

I’m gonna assume that somewhere in DT’s terms and conditions there’s a clause stating they have the rights to anything published there. Plus the Oppo logo Torch made for us has been intentionally left free to use without a copyright. That’s why we’re allowed to make and sell stickers and stuff without paying a license for it.

Drive Tribe is gonna get a bump up if this is all razed. I was just setting it all up and seeing how it works. I like the variety of tribes and the area to put your vehicles, Jalopnik should have done that kind of thing long ago.

Well I don’t mind switching now that I looked at it , I poked around when DT was created, but Oppo was the place I knew so I never really went. It looks like a really cool community. Some cool features, Jalopnik should have done what DT did now that I have really looked around. Oppo is simple though, which is also nice. I guess we will see what happens.

Oh I never thought of that! I upload all my DOTS to a storage tumblr page and then I save the ones I want to a file and post them when I have enough. So they are all saved.

You are not understanding Jalopnik’s (an d oppo’s by extension) relationship to G/O media. Here's the bottom line; they own everything on this site. They wanted to totally pull the plug on all user blogs right now, but only relented to a cut off date out of a courtesy granted to the Jalopnik EIC. G/O doesn't 'have' to do anything. If they wanted to go back on that courtesy and shut it down right now, they could.

Why should this exist at all? Somebody developed tbi, pays for its upkeep, pays for the bandwidth, everything associated with this place, and for what? Certainly not profit. And considering the risks this place does represent (FCA sure was unhappy about Mergio, people here for in shit for getting press cars saying they work for jalopnic (when the address changed and dropped the .jalopnic for the .kinja) , the huge plagiarism scandal on observation deck (io-9 equivalent of oppo)). Oppo is a costly liability that has existed for years on jalopnic convincing others not to just ctrl+shft+A Delete the place.

I understand it well but it wasn’t as if Jalopnik saved all of the personal blogs from being axed on day one. Or maybe they did, if the original plan was to just lock everyone out with no notice and the eic somehow stayed the execution for a couple of weeks. They tried to fight for us and ultimately failed, but it isn’t as if Oppo is getting any special concessions over any other personal blog on Kinja. As best as I can tell anyway.

G/O Media, the (despotic) organization that now owns GMG and made the decision to axe all user blogs, was originally just going to shut things down overnight, no warning. Rory Carroll, current EIC of Jalopnik, along with other members of the GMG fought to give users time to save posts and make plans. Rory and the other GMG staff are also currently working hard on creating a way to transition as much data as possible to the new independent homes that are being created for Oppo and the other blogs . Torch and David were both in on our Zoom call today to show the Jalopnik staff’s solidarity with us and to help plan on how to preserve and transition as much as possible.

After talking to others on the discord yesterday I spun up a forum, it’s a good deal more modern than the old phpbb setup but isn’t perfect. I’m still working on customizing and updating with other Opponauts.  It’s running on my AWS account at the moment so it’s something we control.

The forum in it’s current testing/development state is at http://opposite-lock.com

Functionality is pretty similar to Kinja for posting and notifications work way better during an initial evaluation.

Yeah. I didn’t know for a few years until a mod or someone mentioned it. When we all got transferred over to Kinja years ago it was already there. There was no design competition, no big day when we got a logo, it’s just been there since the beginning of time.
